This week is an international weekend as such there will be no EPL matches. Hence I would like to take the opportunity to write a quick review of all the teams based on the first 7 round of the match thus far. This is just a personal view and I would welcome anyone with other opinions to chip in with any comments.
Arsenal
Strength : Quick passing and movements which will overwhelms opponents without a mobile defense and midfield.
Weakness : Unreliable goalkeeper issues which don’t seem to be solve seasons after seasons. The new young keeper Szczensy is much better but as shown in the north London derby against spur that he’s not quite ready yet. Frankly during the summer, Arsene Wenger has a brilliant opportunity to resolve the problem in the form of Shay Given but pass it out.
The defense doesn’t seem to settle maybe the return of Vermaelen can solve the issue. Arsenal seems to lack a commanding figure to glue the backline together. A centre back that’s able to take charge and organize the defenders. The team needs someone in the mould of Sol Campbell and Tony Adam to lead them. Hopefully over the course of the season, Mertesacker or Vermaelen can provide the leadership.
The team just seems so unlucky with injuries. The number and the quality of players on the sideline are just staggering. It’s the same story very season and this is best summarize in the manner of the broken ankle sustain by Sagna. An innocuous challenge but an unfortunate landing on the concrete ground.
Finally, the team seems to lack a certain conviction, a determination that will help them grind out results and bring them through when the going gets tough. Unfortunately, time and again this is sorely lacking and we can see the shoulders drop when the going is against them. This is best personified in the trashing by Man U. Yes they are down by a man and yes they are playing away. But the Arsenal of old will never allow them to be cut through. The Adams and Keowns will be well organized and defend for their lives.
Key Players : Vermaelen, Ramsey, RVP
Conclusion : They need to have Vermaelen back as soon as the defense looks better with him around. I also feel that Ramsey has already integrated himself to the team and so far has contributed much in assists and goal to the team. Lastly RVP seem to be the only prolific striker in the team and given his injury pro status, I cannot imagine where the goals will come from once he’s injure. Unless Chamakh can step up and do what he’s been brought for.
In summary, the team looks weak in strength and cannot sustain injuries to key players. Also the team seem to lack a mental conviction and this can be seems in games and even interview given by players.
